Just had an argument with a good friend regarding the racial makeup of NFL positions:

I find it odd that, given the NFL consists of 69 percent black players, and 30 percent white, that the most important position in all of sports consists of only 21 percent black quarterbacks.

Why the discrepancy? I will tell you.

American football is most popular in the historically segregated parts of the country. These are also not coincidentally the poorest, and so in Alabama, for example, there is now an obsession with collegiate football because it isn’t economically feasible to support a professional team. The fixation on the college game places an unhealthy emphasis on high school football and consequently more and more focus on developing younger athletes down the ladder.

This is where racist conditioning comes in.

Now, I’d like to be clear. I do not think that most coaches, assistant coaches, or anyone who work in youth football, for the overwhelming majority, are maliciously or even consciously racially biased. If they were, they wouldn’t be volunteering their time for football and would intern for Clarence Thomas. So why aren’t there more black quarterbacks?

The fact is, in the most competitive high school conferences (all in the South), the coaches are white. And, they are a product of their environment – an environment which over the course of a few hundred years has distilled the belief that black people are inferior beings.

Southern football coaches are mostly poorly educated and don’t have a whole lot of perspective on the subject. They have it embedded in them that that black kids don’t as often have the capacity to lead – to make decisions intellectually. There is no other explanation as to why the white Americans – clearly not as athletically suited to play football – dominate its most important position as a minority.

Wouldn’t it be weird if only 21 percent of NBA point guards were black? Why aren’t there more black quarterbacks?

A few statistics from the most recent NFL demographics should question the same concept:

White guys enjoy a slight advantage as far as the makeup of offensive linemen (49 pct vs 46 percent) yet the center position is 82 percent white. The center is the leader of the offensive line and maybe not coincidentally, communicates with and snaps the ball to his white buddy.

White NFL receivers make up 13 percent of that position. Yet only 2 percent of NFL cornerbacks are white. Is there a big difference between those positions?

The fact is, at a youth level, positions are interchangeable and an unawarely biased coach is more likely to have the quarterback (the leader of the team) throw to his white friend than a black guy from across the way. Fact.

Football is dying for a variety of reasons. Like most things primarily Southern, it will soon be seen as barbaric.

But in the meantime, I think it would only be fair that we have more black quarterbacks, and for good measure I think we should make Peyton Manning return kickoffs for a few games just to even things out.
