Is Honey Boo Boo Still Funny? 1

Ketel One Hosts The VIP Red Carpet Suite At The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

I never had an ethical problem sitting down to watch Here Comes Honey Boo Boo so I could gawk at some disgusting obese tragedies of the Civil War spit out inane jokes fed to them by deservedly patronizing on-set producers. The irony is said producers probably think they’re really sophisticated and smart comparatively. Based on what? Speaking with a vocal fry instead of a drawl? Being fine artists? Not being obese I guess. Check.

Sure the show celebrated child beauty pageantry, which is an institution of child abuse. Sexualizing little girls is pretty gross. Unless you’re a child molester.

The show’s audience could be characterized as inherently mean spirited when juxtaposed against its subjects. People used to watch cowboys and superheros. I thought exploiting those who may or may not have the mental capacity to understand the joke was fine with me when browsing.

That goes for the soon to be diabetic Honey Boo Boo and her mother Mama June, who seem to oddly be on the same emotional and mental level… More on that later.

What else did they have going on with their lives anyway?

The few times I saw it left me feeling yucky. The premise seemingly revolved around turning a budding adult into an asshole child.

Its not like she had a ton of potential anyway. Boo Boo seemed arrested for a nine year old.  Not that it mattered. You’d have to be Will Hunting to escape that cultural bear trap as it snapped your leg and left you out for the wolves.

Donate this one to science and move on.

Everyone loves a train wreck, and its weird to see how the people whom God has forsaken live their lives. Usually they’re really grateful to him.

Well, it turns out what we were watching was not so much a harmless spectacle of pigs wallowing in shit as much as a documentation of the cyclical effects of orchestrated poverty, which leads to indolence and hopelessness, which leads to religion, which leads to guilt, which leads to kids getting molested and it being swept under the rug. Which leads Honey Boo Boo’s family.

The Confederate flag waving breed who actually embrace the tradition of boiled peanuts and rape. The George W. Bush’s of the world. The anti intellectual crowd. Yeah, we’re dumb and proud. Wanna fight?

When I heard Mama June, the cringe worthy mother of Boo Boo, was continuing a relationship with Mark McDaniel, the guy who served ten years in prison for a violent sexual assault on her own daughter, the situation spun into focus.

Her daughter was eight years old when she was attacked. Honey Boo Boo is nine.

Clearly he had done it before, and odds are overwhelming he will do it again.

I guess that’s proof they were never in on the joke.

This twister of ignorance spins around and around with the victims held close by gravity.

She probably believes what he tells her.

That he is rehabilitated.

Resembling a dead whale carcass doesn’t help much. You’re especially vulnerable to any sort of affection because you’re gross.

That’s what predators do.

In retrospect we probably shouldn’t have been encouraging these people.

TLC’s producers should have scouted the location and given them a sack of vegetables and some books for the kids and moved on.

We were really just laughing at sick people, which was the whole point.

Just too sick.

Hence I feel yucky.

To be clear, I hope Mama June drops dead before making any more babies. She was almost certainly assaulted as a young girl. Hence the obsession with the pageants. But that doesn’t excuse any of this.

And the cycle goes on and on. Big wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

Not so funny anymore.

Maybe that’s why its called The Learning Channel.

TLC should really pat themselves on the back for educating us.

Or their head of development should pull a Budd Dwyer. One or the other.

Take back your ads Papa John’s.

I’d like Taco Bell to rescind their sponsorship.

Let’s take back our condescending chuckles too.

Everyone lost.

Shit just got real.

More later.
